ᴅᴏᴡɴ ɪꜱ ᴜᴘ: ᴏɴ ɢᴇᴛᴛɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʜᴇᴀᴅ ꜱᴜʙᴍᴇʀɢᴇ ɪɴ ᴀɴ ɪᴄᴇʙᴇʀɢ

 

In response to melting ice caps and global capitalism, we initiated a long-term artistic research which dives into the contemporary scenarios of eco-geo-political warfare while being inspired by ancestral pre and post-colonial narratives and practices, as a subversive force against the incinerating, extractivist machineries run by the anthropocentric North. As a strategy, we brought the DOWN - the South and that which has been rendered invisible - UP to the geo-surface of our consciousness, thus inverting the logics of orientation as cemented by the dominant westernised world views.

Through an ecosystem combining voices from indigenous environmental activists to non-western cosmogonies, reversed cartographies and queer erotica, the aim was to present an inverted lexicon of order, thus questioning the fixed relations established under totalitarian systems of knowledge production. The normal is rendered absurd and the threatened voices of the South create an acoustic environment, pulsing what has been made invisible and obsolete. These dissident voices have been drowned in the depths of the oceans, buried within what now became archeological earth sediments and frozen within icebergs.

Icebergs do not know their North-South orientation as is utilised by military maps. They do not have a stable core and are in a constant change of form and constituency. Inspired by the submerged mass of the iceberg harvesting these transformative potentials, the under-water/under-world offers a perspective of being so that the practice of recreating existence in the visible material world can occur over and over. While the existence of icebergs at this moment of time is almost conditional to our own existence, we look towards them as ephemeral reminders of what has been frozen for the purpose of preservation.
